Hsia Yan
Fuzzy people jiggling in still scene

Hsia Yang made this work in 1992, after moving back to Taiwan from New York. At that time, social and networking in Karaoke was popular in Taiwan. In this painting, some people are dancing along with the music video on the screen while some are feasting on the food on the table. However, Hsia’s fuzzy figures imply that individuals are blending and vanishing in collective consciousness. The lyrics on the screen saying “flowers and trees everywhere, the sky is blue, yet my heart is melancholy”, shows the individuals are tied to the intangible social norm.
