Hsieh Teh Ching
His works challenge the physical limits and realize the value of art

Born in 1950 Nanjhou Pingtung County. Taiwan. 1967 he dropped out from high school and went to learn basic painting skills at Shiy DeJinn’s art studio in Taipei. Hsieh adopted abstract and expressionism in his paintings prevalent in Taiwan during 1960s. He completed thousands pastel paintings, oil paintings, sketches and charcoal drawings before he joined mandatory military services. He only exhibited once his paintings at the gallery of United States Information Service in Taiwan in 1973. After that exhibition he decided to quit paintings and turned his art career to performance art. From 1978 to 1986, Hsieh accomplished five One Year Performances which created his fame as an international well-known performance artist.


One Year Performance


Hsieh became one of the illegal immigrants in 1974. From 1978 to 1986, Hsieh made a series of “One Year Performance”, including 5 pieces of works. From 1986 to 1999, he made another work named “Thirteen Year Plan”, during that time, he made art but did not show them in public. In 2000, Hsieh announced that he kept himself alive. He stopped making art since then.
